The healthcare sector mainly deals with lives. As a result, it calls for sound professional thinking to ensure that there is no life put at risk. Health professionals therefore, need to be of sound mind in order to make similar judgments in the clinical perspective. Sound judgment itself emanates from the ability to think critically in combination with strong analytical skills. This paper is going to look at the concept of critical thinking in a health centre, through the eyes of medical personnel. Mike's case study offers the best look into the application of critical thinking and decision making.
Mike has been warned by his boss that continued lateness might cost him his job. To ensure that this doesn't happen, Mike even leaves for work twenty minutes earlier, so as to keep the promise he made to his boss of being right on time. The problem is that there is some traffic hitch on the way, which delays him up a bit. Upon arrival at work, there is a spill that also creates a dilemma. If he cleans it up, he will most likely be late at his workplace. This is compounded by the fact that the spill is not at his work area. It might therefore still be cleaned as he cloaks in. He is therefore faced with a dilemma on what to do.
It is very clear that any decision he makes will most probably have repercussions later on. The consequences of failing to report are that the spill resulted to an injury to a patient later on. Coincidentally, it was Mike who was at hand to address the patient's pains. He suspected the patient had a fractured hip as a result of the fall, and felt even guiltier that he might have prevented the accident had he reported. This guilt brings him to the realization that he would seriously risk being sacked if he reported that he didn't clean the spill up. As it can be seen, the initial decision not to report the problem results in a chain reaction that goes touches on almost each department. This in its own way results to a build up in the workload on the departments and hence on the facility as a whole, while it is something that would have been mitigated earlier.
This case illustrates a situation involving two different issues, and addressed as well by a combination of two aspects; his responsibilities as a nurse, and also his responsibilities as an employee at the facility. The skill of criti...
