This is written as an opinion piece in two sections which you might imagine submitting to a newspaper, online journal, or public announcement. Pros
In this section, you will argue in favor of one side of an ethical or controversial argument related to your topic. It can be more controversial as well – in regards to why some people support assisted dying and others vehemently do not.
Cons
In this section, you will argue against the side you argued in favor of above. Be clear to argue in favor of one position above, and against that same position in this section. In this example, you might discuss the cons of virtual funerals over face to face funerals, as given the example above; or, the pitfalls of home care for those who are dying during a pandemic.

The opioid crisis remains Canada’s primary concern because of the increased deaths and potential risk factors. Illegal and prescription opioids have led to the extensive prevalence of the opioid crisis. The number of hospitalized Canadians has been increasing tremendously as a result of opioid-related poisonings in the country. The opioid crisis affects people in communities across Canada and not only persons who use street or illegal drugs. In Canada, government and policymakers alike have recognized opioid-related harms and non-medical opioid use as Canada’s primary concerns. Internet purchases, forgery, theft, and street drug markets are the major factors that have influenced an increase in the prevalence of opioid use across Canada.
The increasing rates of opioid-related deaths across Canada have made the menace one of the national public health crises. According to the National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine (2017), Canada recorded a total of 1018 opioid-related deaths in 2020, most of which were accidental. Because of the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic during the opioid crisis, Ontario’s government declared a state of emergency. In the first wave, the government imposed public health restrictions to mitigate the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Lisa and Jessica (2018), the reduction in the capacity of pharmacies and healthcare coverage resulted in decreased care to drug users. Therefore, some of the measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus resulted in unintended harm. Ontario’s chief announced an increase in drug-related deaths with similar trends in other parts of Canada. Canada is in the midst of the opioid crisis, making the menace a leading public health and safety concern.
History
The use of opioids began in the late 1990s after pharmaceutical companies reassured the medical community that they would not have to develop an addiction to opioid pain relievers. Wakeman and Barnett (2018) aver that since the 1980s, opioid sales in hospitals and pharmacies for prescriptions have continued to rise. As a result, healthcare providers began to prescribe them at an increased rate, resulting in widespread misuse of the medications. However, opioid overdose rates began to expand, leading to high death rates in the country. The government dispensed over 20 million opioid prescriptions, equivalent to one medication for every adult in the country. In 2017, a total of 47,000 people succumbed to opioid overdose, including opioid drugs. Canada emerged as the second-largest consumer of opioid prescriptions after the United States globally.
Since 1999, the rates of opioid misuse and opioid-related harm have increased. Statistics indicate that non-medical opioid prescriptions were among the most prevalent forms of drug abuse in the country. According to Skoy et al. (2020), 2% of opioid users reported having misused the drugs, while a more significant percentage used the drugs without any prescription.
