Physical abuse
Physical abuse occurs when someone physically harms an elderly person for whatever reason or even restraining and confining them against their will due to their infirmity or weakness (Weissberger et al, 2019).
Sexual abuse
Sexual abuse of elders occurs when someone forces them to engage in sexual acts or watch them against their will
Emotional or psychological abuse
Emotional or psychological abuse occurs when someone undermines an elderly person’s feelings of self-esteem or independence through actions and verbal messages.
Financial and material exploitation
Financial and material abuse occurs when someone engages in acts of commission or omission meant to dispossess an elderly person of their resources. It can include actions committed against the elderly while they are still alive e.g. forging their signature to access their fortunes/savings; or it can include actions committed while they have already passed on e.g. changing beneficiaries of their will, life insurance, etc.
Neglect
Neglect occurs when a caregiver refuses to respond to an elderly person’s needs and requests which they cannot address on their own e.g. assistance to get to hospital, assistance to move around, assistance to maintain personal hygiene.
Abandonment
Abandonment occurs when a caregiver deserts an elderly person who needs their assistance in social, physical and emotional situations.
Self-neglect
Self-neglect occurs when an elderly person disregards their personal needs which they can address on their own or with the assistance of a caregiver e.g. assistance to get to a lavatory, assistance to get medication, maintaining personal hygiene, etc.
