Flexibility programming for an older client
Both static and dynamic stretching are considered, but there is more focus on static stretching, which targets strengthening the muscles and the surrounding tissues and this helps to increase the range of motion stretch 3-5 times per week, 3 to 5 times and 30 seconds hold. There is a warm up and the stretching is gentle so that it does not cause pain. The functional capacity of the neuromuscular system begins to decline as one ages and this increases the risk of frailty. There is also reduced flexibility of the joints and motion. Stretching improves posture, helps reduce back pain, stimulates balance and is beneficial for those with arthritis. Other benefits include reducing muscle pain and stiffness, prevent injuries and cramps as well as relax the body.

Varying the exercise and the intensity of the exercises including stretching helps to improve overall fitness and the muscle do not get used to only one type of exercises. Besides changing the movements or intensities, it is beneficial to warm-up as this reduces the risk of injury. Additionally, when one does the warm-ups they are well placed to perform the exercises better including the repetitions that we indicate without resting between them.
