Apply knowledge, with mentor guidance and supervision, of chronic and acute psychiatric mental health disorders using the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders diagnostic criteria to assess, diagnose and manage the patient populations across the lifespan, including a focus on vulnerable people at risk for mental health disorders.
We used the DSM-5 Manual in this course and with each preceptor to treat and diagnose each patient. Acute mania and acute depression were two of the critical diagnoses. Schizophrenia and Bipolar one and two were among the chronic diagnoses. A thorough history and physical examination were conducted after the patient’s diagnosis to assess whether the patient was a member of a vulnerable demographic and, if so, what kind of community resources they would require. This course taught me how to properly diagnose patients using the DSM-5 Manual (Kazdin, 2019).
Integrate, with mentor guidance and supervision, complete mental health assessment, interview, history, and physical exam data collection with the knowledge of pathophysiology and psychopathology of psychiatric mental health disorders across the lifespan to form differential diagnoses and implement therapeutic, patient-centered treatment plans and interventions for patient populations across the lifespan.
Every preceptor had a different method for teaching me how to conduct a thorough mental health evaluation and interview, but the results were always the same. Additionally, I learned various techniques from each preceptor to check for physical signs indicating a patient’s mental health problem. In every case, the differential diagnosis was always discussed. Patient-focused therapy and care plans were always created based on the patient’s life situation at the treatment time.

I have discovered that each preceptor has a different method for incorporating conventional and unconventional pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies into their care plans. The distinction between inpatient and outpatient therapies astounded me. Every patient had a unique treatment plan, but my preceptor always seemed open to trying new approaches, whether conventional or complementary (Jones et al., 2022). The fact that this course taught us about both conventional and alternative therapies made it excellent.
