Please identify two legal issues in treating children and adolescents, including the rationale for why these issues are priorities. Next, describe two important components of risk management for psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners when working with children and adolescents.
One of the legal issues is insufficient documentation and communication with appropriate parties regarding the child at risk of harming themselves or others. The failure to provide essential documentation is a concern as the documents capture the information on intervention undertaken, patient history, and risks. Suppose the client experiences suicidal ideation and thoughts, and the mental health practitioners know this. In that case, they need to communicate with the patients/ clients, parents, guardians, and staff, while also involving the courts. Failure to take action and subsequent suicide would result in the practitioner being held responsible. Understanding and identifying suicidal behaviors, threats, and suicide ideation is beneficial to improve outcomes, but there are few or no records to make informed decisions (Stead, Boylan & Schmidt, 2019).
