Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) in Alabama need a written collaborative practice agreement with a physician. The law requires the physician be available to the PMHNP for consultation either physically or by phone (Alabama, 2018). Additionally, the collaborating physician should be present on-site with the PMHNP at least 10 percent of the working time and should review approximately 10 percent of the nurse practitioner’s (NP) charts (Alabama, 2018). Alabama provides limited authority for PMHNP to prescribe medications. The NP’s can only prescribe in collaboration with the physician.
