Describe the difference between a nursing practice problem and a medical practice problem. Provide one example of each.
Medical practice problems deal with diseases or medical conditions. The main objective of a medical practice problem is to identify dysfunction or defects within a patient through the application of problem-solving approaches. As a result, medical practice problems focus on diagnostic tests, medical history, and physical examination because these parameters provide the basis for identifying and treating an illness or condition (Holmberg, 2013). Since the time of Pasteur and Koch, medical practice problems in the western world are always handled by physicians. Therefore, it is the responsibility of physicians to treat the patient after the medical practice problem has been identified.
On the other hand, nursing practice problems relate to human response to health issues in patients. The concept of nursing practice problems is related to the idea that although nurses understand what the patient is suffering from, they see the patients suffering in the larger context of their lives (Huston, 2013). Therefore, a nursing practice problem is usually identified during the assessment or treatment of the patient. In some situations, data on a nursing problem related to a patient is collected immediately the patient enters the healthcare facility. The nurse then uses the data to select an intervention that achieves a particular outcome.
