Research studies require an extensive literature review to recognize the gap in the existing knowledge about a particular topic. It is crucial since there is no point in researching a redundant topic, which has been validated multiple times. An excellent literature review includes various types of sources that the researchers can critically appraise. Classifying the sources from literature is vital in assessing their validity and reliability. Hence, this paper aims to identify, explain, and provide examples of the different types of sources, which can be used in future studies.
Hayen (2020) explained that the definition of primary source changes based on context, such that it is formulated at the exact timeline of the topic being researched. Generally, these are authentic materials that were not subjected to any forms of alterations. The information is presented as it was first seen or read without filtration or interpretation of the meaning of the text. It is the basis of most research papers, especially those that challenge original theories, philosophies, discoveries, and new information. These are people’s first-hand images, documents, or testimonies, allowing them to talk about their first-hand experiences, observations, and viewpoints. Typically, these can be found in hard copies. However, due to the threat of paper disintegration, most of these have been scanned or transformed into the electric format. (UCI Libraries, 2021; UHV Library, 2021; Hayen, 2020). These drive the paper’s argument and serve as the foundation of research because these are original accounts. It provides an authentic view of the past, which postulates the following: 1) Individual significance allows the researcher to understand the emotions and ideologies of the people providing the primary sources at the time.; 2) Historical perspective; 3) It delivers the consequences of historical events (UHV Library, 2021).
