I have also developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I can become a member of this organization.

I chose Family Nurse Practioner because I want to be able to care for all ages but I would consider Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practioner.

I chose the Family Nurse Practitioner as my preferred nursing specialty but the Adult-Gerontology Primacy Care Nurse Practitioner is still under consideration. The main reason why I chose my preferred specialty is because I would like to work with patients across the age groups. I do not want to be limited to a single age group, and hence my reason for the choice. Family Nurse Practitioners or FNPs mainly offer family-focused care. As an FNP, one will be called upon to “offer a wide range of healthcare services that revolve around the family unity; from health promotion and disease prevention to direct care and counseling across the lifespan” (GraduateNursingEDU.org, 2020). Working as an FNP calls for graduate-level education as well as clinical training. These two competencies put them in a position to not only give healthcare help to family units but also work as policymakers and clinical administrators. Patient education is also another function of FNPs.
On the other hand, an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner is a person who focuses their attention on adolescents, adults, and older adults. Essentially, an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP) seeks to “promote and sustain health in the community and workplace” (University of California San Francisco, 2020). The population might be limited, but there is no limit on the risks and cultures of the patients. My option, however, is centered or involves primary care. So, focus is mainly on prevention of diseases and promoting health. Such a role also involves offering care that is centered on patients, and could involve activities like promotion of healthy lifestyles, managing chronic diseases, and collection and assessment of health data to help develop disease patterns.
