Definition and Explanation of the Issue of Incivility.
Introduction
Workplace incivility is a well-established issue in the nursing profession within healthcare settings. It can potentially undermine the physical and psychological wellbeing of the victims and possibly affect the quality of health care services delivered. Incivility among staff in healthcare organizations can be conceptualized as an occupational hazard. In this context, the Covid-19 pandemic created an impetus for profound and sudden changes in many healthcare organizations, contributing to incivility and unwanted behaviors. This paper defines and explains the incivility issue, and its significance in nursing, provides a scenario of incivility and its impact on involved persons and the work environment, strategies to foster a healthful environment, and appraises the role of the family nurse practitioner in cultivating a healthful workplace environment.
According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), incivility is the discourteous, ill-mannered, or rude actions that might or might not have damaging intentions behind them (Lippincott Nursing Center, 2022). Workplace incivility is increasingly becoming rampant in healthcare organizations. Incivility in nursing is also referred to as nurse bullying or horizontal violence, and it contributes to a wide range of outcomes including but not limited to medical errors and work absenteeism. In this context, incivility should not be accepted or tolerated within the professional workplace. According to Lippincott Nursing Center (2022), workplace incivility culture can contribute to diminished teamwork, deteriorated patient safety measures, medical and medication errors, poor nurse-patient relationships, undesirable ramifications on the hospital’s reputation, high staff turnover, absenteeism, reduced productivity and morale, deteriorated patient care quality, and rising patient mortality rates.
Importance of Incivility in Nursing.
At the individual level, Hampton and Rayens (2019) noted that incivility acts could negatively impact the nurse’s self-confidence and self-worth. Experiencing incivility could contribute to physical harm and deteriorated mental health, prompting the nurse to seek days off work to recover (U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2020). Incivility acts significantly impact microsystem work environments. As horizontal violence escalates, there is an increased probability of negative ramifications on staff quality and retention. In this context, nurses cannot share information with other healthcare professionals, thus leading to medical errors. Incivility negatively impacts the nurses’ work abilities, job performance, and career expectations (Zhang et al., 2018). Accordingly, exposure to workplace incivility alters the nurses’ thought processes, perspectives, and behaviors towards the nursing profession. In this way, incivility will likely impact the nurse’s overall wellbeing or health, patient care quality, and work performance (Alshehry et al., 2019).
