Curriculum development is a scholarly and creative process. The process is expected to create a context-relevant, integrated and an evidence-informed curriculum (Priestley & Philippou, 2019). Therefore, this is an issue that can significantly affect the outcome of nursing. However, it is common to find that the curriculum development process is not conducted in sequential phases. In effect, the processes are iterative and are likely to affect the previous one (Priestley & Philippou, 2019). This paper aims at discussing the major issue with regards to curriculum development; the meaning and lack of a context-relevant, unified and an evidence-informed curriculum.
However, this paper begins with the definition of the curriculum with regards to nursing education. The model of evidence-informed curriculum is also examined. However, more focus is given to the interpersonal issues that affect the team and those at the workplace. Moreover, the paper will provide strategies that will be used to resolve the identified problem. A curriculum is a previously planned set of courses that are based on information with particular goals. In this context, the nursing curriculum is that which is based on objectives and instructional planning. This is an idea that relies on research concerning human development and learning. Nursing education should provide the best curriculum that will ensure that nurses, staff, and patients get the most out of it. I believe that the best curriculum is that which is evidence-informed. Here, decisions are based on research results. Furthermore, it is one where students are to play the most important role (Khan & Law, 2015).
The effect and relevance of an evidence-informed curriculum depend on the idea that learning occurs. In developed institutions, learning evaluation is done in several ways. Among them include written plans that contain philosophical statements and goals, the sequence of subject matter and learning experiences, and organization. The aforementioned factors are aspects of the curriculum development process. I have chosen an issue that is a totality of the philosophical approaches, the learning climate, curriculum goals, overall design, courses, interactions, delivery methods, curriculum policies, and resources (Noriea et al., 2017).
There are current trends and issues with regards to the nursing curriculum. This is in line with the previously mentioned, context-relevant, unified and evidence-informed curriculum. A good curriculum that will bring out the best out of nurses is one that is context-relevant. We say that a curriculum is context-related when it is receptive to learners. It should be in line with the existing and anticipated requirements of the nursing career as well as existing and expected social, health and communal circumstances (Priestley & Philippou, 2019). Students will have the opportunity to learn more about community health and practical situations that are experienced in health facilities.
