The contemporary world has presented a lot of challenges that are becoming unbearable to mankind from terrorism, economic turmoil, pandemics, and natural disasters just to mention but a few. Issues related to public health are genuinely critical and thus immediate and urgent course of action is needed to overcome them. Despite the commendable efforts by the various healthcare administrations inclusive of the World Health Organization (WHO) to counter the numerous healthcare issues that pose threat to humanity, a good number of them still commands reason for alarm. Pandemics of the pasts such as cholera and HIV are certainly among them, and then there is the recent one, COVID-19 that is still raising havoc around the globe. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), however slow they might be causing health deterioration and lethality, they equally deserve maximum attention and financial support.
Noncommunicable is a term used to refer to diseases like diabetes, cancer, asthma, heart diseases, and other a few that may be contracted as a result of genetic, physiological, environmental, behavioral factors, and/or a combination (World Health Organization, 2018). A survey conducted by the WHO indicates that NCDs contribute to approximately 70% of the annual global deaths, with people living in low-income regions and are in their productive age being at greatest risk (World Health Organization, 2018). The causative factors also have the potential of triggering other medical conditions of much concern such as mental health issues. Initially, the healthcare administrations around the world paid much attention to other threats to public health, overshadowing NCDs despite its lethality. The response in the recent past to curb NCDs has been commendable though, WHO being at the forefront in the fight against the tragedy.
