Culture of Accountability Vs. Just Culture
Whereas a culture of accountability within healthcare facilities can enhance patient outcomes, a just culture is practiced within my workplace. The just culture improves patient safety by empowering medical professionals to monitor their actions proactively and engage in safety endeavors within the work environment. A just culture is preferred to the culture of accountability at the workplace. This is because the just culture framework guarantees a balanced responsibility for both the organization and individuals responsible for creating and enhancing systems within the workplace. The Chief Medical Officer at my workplace recognizes that designing a transparent and safe workplace motivates workers to report hazards and errors, ultimately enhancing our patients’ care. Still, the just culture is not strong enough at my workplace. In this environment, healthcare workers constantly feel uncomfortable speaking up when they encounter an issue threatening patient safety and feel blamed when mistakes happen (Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, 2021).
