Health care providers come across complicated situations which require decision making. It is crucial that the decision made is critically to avoid mishaps. In Mike's case, he fails to report the spill because he feels that he is late in clocking. This decision is not the right one because there are grievous consequences. Although his hurriedness emanate from the fear of losing his job since he is the only breadwinner for a younger family, he should have considered the implications of the failure to report the spill and make a critical decision. The failure to report the spill in the parlor results to myriad of problems.
A person happens to fall in the lobby after sliding from the spill. The patient is admitted in the hospital with a broken hip from the fall. The patient is in a lot of pain. This occurrence paints the hospital in a bad light because; the patient wonders why the hospital is not as safe as expected and why they would not have measures to prevent such occurrences. When Mike learns of this, he is flooded with guilt feelings and his dilemma multiplies. This is because he does not know whether to reveal what happened or not. He fears that the manager may decide to terminate his job which would be too bad because Mike has a wife and a young child to take care of with the salary. The list of the consequences of the failure to report the spill is long and this shows that Mike made the wrong decision not to report the spill to the relevant body. Fukuda, Okuma & Imanaka (2014) observe that; there is need for providers, including managers, to always think critically before making a decision.
Mike's decision not to report the spill had different impacts on different areas. There was negative impact to patient safety. The spill on the lobby presented a danger to the patients (and even the hospital workers as well as any other person around the hospital). The spill caused a person to fall on the lobby and break his hip. This caused a lot of pain to the patient. The patient must have had a negative view of the hospital from the fall. Polston & Roshelli (2014) assert that; the expectation of the patient is that the hospital should be a safe place and that it should have ways of preventing such happenings.
