A school nurse`s role is to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for the children in school. My expectations have always been to provide the best nursing care to school going children and the community and I will achieve this as a school nurse. Today, school nurses participate in the development of policies and procedures in the schools and the communities by coordinating with the education and nursing fields. They also ensure high quality delivery of nursing care in the school community (National Association of School Nurses, 2016). My expectations concur with the roles school nurses play today and if there is anything I would change, it would be to advocate for more training and education of school nurses in relation to the changing world. I would also promote health education in the school community through healthy living and prevention of illnesses.
The school principal would regard the roles of the school nurse as important, especially in making sound decisions that involve the student’s health. The school nurse would also be included in school board decision making meetings. In my opinion, it is important to embrace the school nurse in the welfare of the school when it comes to school policies because they are equipped with the right knowledge and skills that can provide good guidance in student health matters (Travers & G. A. n.d.). School principals understand the roles school nurses play in health promotion of the students according to their standards, procedures and ethical work guidelines. I would serve the school community better by conducting annual or monthly tests to screen for common diseases on the students and the community (Dr. Terry Bergeson, 2000).
The office staff and teachers perceive school nurses as crucial for the enhancement of both the students and the staff health through advice and support on medical matters to not only the students, but also the staff. Students perceive school nurses as health educators and promoters through their response on any student injuries, illnesses and promotion of health education in the school community (Travers & G. A. n.d.). I would offer my services to all members of the school community as guided by the nurses’ association guidelines. I would also promote health education and awareness in the school community and encourage everyone to work together to prevent illnesses so as to improve the education and nursing sectors.
