Dear Congressman/Congresswoman ____________________,
I am writing to you with regards to my full support to the creation of a Conscience and Religious Freedom Division (CRFD) as it will help to effectively enforce existing laws protecting the rights of conscience and religious freedom for health care workers.
Issues regarding religious freedom have already been discussed in the past by various leaders. However, the Trump administration is now on the move to address Religious liberty. With this, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently presented to the public the formation of a Conscience and Religious Freedom Division. It aims to give health care workers the freedom to decline and object to provide services like abortion and assisted suicide if they think that their beliefs are being violated. This is particularly important in the health care setting because there are ethical principles that health care providers follow such as principles regarding respect for autonomy (respecting the decision-making capabilities of patients), non-maleficence (causing no harm to others), beneficence (preventing harm and providing benefits at all times), and justice. These are all the guiding principles of health care providers that helps them understand their roles and goals in the health care system. More importantly, these are fundamental in the approach to making an ethical assessment of all hospital cases.
The crucial role of health care providers is to provide quality medical care to promote patient’s quality of life. However, there are instances where their views are biased by their personal beliefs interfering with their decisions.
