A community health nurse can use various ways to recognize bias, stereotypes, and implicit bias within the community. One way is to pay attention to gut feelings (Narayan, 2019). Everything from racial disparity to a language barrier and social class can make a community health nurse assume a patient has particular beliefs, traits, or behaviors that make them feel uncomfortable (FitzGerald & Hurst, 2017). Noticing that feeling when attempting to explain treatment to a patient or responding to their needs helps recognize bias. Another way is communicating with the patients to understand their cultural differences. Understanding cultural differences help the nurse identify any negative perception or the assumption they hold against the patient.
To ensure cultural competency in the health promotional activities, the nurse should address the above concepts by first understanding the patient’s cultural background.
