Community-based intervention is one of the approaches that can be employed in helping reduce the growing problem of obesity in California. The theory or approach emphasizes on the adoption of methods that are applicable to the community as a whole, to help mitigate the problem of obesity. There is the need for California to invest in programs that can curb the rising incidences of the problem. Community-based intervention extends beyond the behavior of individuals, addressing changes in policies and environment (Flegal et al., 2010). It can be expensive for an individual to undertake some of the appropriate interventions. Such processes can be unsuccessful if the environment inhabited by the people offers unhealthy products and has no safe areas for physical activities (Sallis & Glanz, 2009).
Schools need appropriate intervention programs to help them focus on diets and physical activities. The programs should go a long way to help prevent child obesity. The intervention programs are more effective if health education and family outreach are incorporated. Children in middle school and younger should be involved in the programs because there are more likely to consume products that have low nutritional value (Babey et al., 2009). The government needs to formulate public policies at the state and local levels as the main mechanism for changing the environment responsible of promulgating obesity (Mermin & Graff, 2009).
