Medical coding can be defined as the transformation of healthcare procedures, diagnosis, equipment and services into medical alphanumeric codes. In simple words, we can say that when different healthcare services and equipment are given specific names or are denoted with some codes, then this phenomenon is regarded as medical coding. It should be noticed that different procedures and diagnoses codes are obtained from medical record documentation, including radiologic and laboratory tests, notes or prescriptions given by the physician and other similar things. It is the responsibility of medical coding professionals to ensure that codes are applied at proper places and in a correct form during the medical billing process. This process involves abstracting information from different documents, assigning correct codes and creating claims to be paid by insurance companies or carriers. Whenever a person sees a medical expert, he or she has to keep in mind that medical coding will happen in any way or form. The medical expert first reviews the medical history and complaints, documents the visit and makes a judgment regarding what is wrong and how to solve the problem.
An Overview of ICD, CPT and HCPCS Level II
The International Classification of Disease, also known as ICD, is an internationally famous and well-recognized system of recording different diagnoses, symptoms, and causes of death. This system has its own specific alphanumeric codes that follow international standards, ensuring that the diagnosis is interpreted in a single way by all medical professionals no matter which part of the world they live in and which hospital they work in. Its early version is ICD-9, which has been replaced by ICD-10. It is said to be a better, more comprehensive and sophisticated set of codes that is designed to address all of the issues of ICD-9.
CPT, also known as Current Procedural Terminology, is another famous coding system that health experts use to standardize health communication across the board. It helps identify the services provided in different medical centers or hospitals and insurance companies use this system to determine how much doctors or physicians should be paid for their services.
