Substance abuse counselors work closely with adults and adolescents struggling with alcohol- and drug-related addiction. These clients are emotionally distraught and require a high level of skills and professionalism. The code of ethics is designed to guide counselors in their relationships with clients and ensure a high level of professionalism, work quality, and positive mental health outcomes. Autonomy, conscientious refusal, beneficence, and competence are among the critical areas that counselors should consider when going about their duties (NAADAC, 2016).
The most beneficial aspect of the code of ethics is that it guides counselors in making ethical decisions.
