Early Childhood Education: Children’s Trauma
Child trauma can affect a person's life even in adulthood. In her article, Katie Statman-Weil explains well how child trauma occurs. She begins with stories of traumatized children to show how serious this issue is. Over the years, research has been conducted to ascertain how child abuse affects an individual's life. In most of these studies, researchers have found that child abuse has severe consequences for children (Jennings & Siegel, 2019). Child abuse is viewed as very serious and damaging because it can affect how a child lives the rest of their life. It is, therefore, befitting to refer to the experience that results from child abuse as child trauma. Through her article, Statman-Weil allows the reader to understand how child trauma develops and what the consequences are for the victims.
The author highlights ways in which child trauma can be eliminated. However, I believe that it takes more than an appeal to care for children to eliminate the problem. Currently, a child services agency exists to ensure children's welfare. While the agency can enforce the law on children's welfare, the overall goal cannot be achieved unless parents are educated. The process of sensitization should not only be conducted among parents. As Statman-Weil notes, children in foster care also experience child trauma (Statman-Weil, 2015). It is a well-known fact that foster care homes have garnered a reputation for producing most of the country's juveniles. Some of these children may not have experienced child trauma. However, as studies have shown, most of them exhibit behaviours attributable to child abuse experiences. As a result, the government need to revise the foster care system. In addition to this, authors such as Statman-Weil need to focus on child trauma in foster care homes to understand the crisis in this system better.
Most teenagers, young adults and adults today have experienced child trauma. Despite this, most of them continue to lead productive and successful lives. Among adults, the effects of child trauma are likely to have diminished given their advanced age. However, these effects may still be present among teenagers and young adults. In the...
