Professionals in the service industry require certification from recognized learning institutions before receiving license to begin service. In pursuit of certification, it is essential that a professional settles for state policies that best resonate with their career objectives and favor their growth as professionals. This paper is a discussion of my certification plan as a practicing nurse. I will begin by analyzing my home state policies, opting for a state with more favorable policies, identify the strengths and weaknesses of the chosen state exam and finally develop a study plan that uses them to my advantage.
I would begin by analyzing the nursing practice environment in my home state South Carolina. The state policies governing the practice of nurses in South Carolina are limiting to the growth of a nursing practitioner as a professional. They work under the supervision of physicians licensed by the state and are not allowed to operate independently. “Nursing Practitioners in South Carolina may perform delegated medical acts pursuant to a written protocol between the NP and a physician. The protocol includes the nature of practice and practice locations of the NP and physician, a description of how consultation with the physician is provided and information about the NP’s delegated medical acts” (South Carolina Scope of Practice Policy, 2018).
I would opt to take the Fitzgerald Health Education Associates (FHEA) certification exam over the University of Carolina College of Nursing certification exam. This is because the FHEA is located in Massachusetts where the nursing practice policies are more favorable in comparison to South Carolina. In Massachusetts, nursing practitioners are allowed to operate independently as an entity without relying on supervision from the physicians with directive from the latter being sought only when the NP wants to prescribe medication. “Nursing practitioners in Massachusetts may diagnose and treat patients without the oversight and supervision of a physician. An NP however, may only prescribe medication under the supervision of a physician…” (Massachusetts Scope of Practice Policy, 2018)
