Certification and Licensure in Maryland
In Maryland, there is no provision for supervision of nurses by physicians. However, the state requires that nurse practitioners have a collaboration with physicians. The collaboration agreement should have the provision that the physician is available for consultation on a case-by-case basis (Maryland Board of Nursing, n.d.). However, state laws do not necessarily require the physician to be physically present in all situations where the nurse is carrying out their role. There are seven steps that one should follow to be licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Maryland. The first is pursuing doctoral studies. The area of specialization should be recognized by the Maryland Board of Nursing. The second step is to pursue national accreditation in the area of speciality. The third is applying to the Maryland Board of Nursing, requesting to be licensed. The fourth step is to make a collaborative agreement with a physician. As noted above, although supervision is not mandatory, a nurse practitioner is obligated to make a collaboration agreement. The fifth step is submitting the application and making appropriate payments. After this step, the other involves some background checks to ensure that the candidate is eligible (Maryland Board of Nursing, n.d.). For instance, a criminal background check is often carried out. The last step is to be issued with the license.
The application process for certification in Maryland is simple. It involves filling out an application form on the Maryland Board of Nursing website. An application fee of $50 is levied (Maryland Board of Nursing, n.d.). During the application, the candidate should provide proof of education, that is, the certificate and transcripts. In addition, there should also be proof of certification by a national nursing body. The application process also requires one to submit a passport photo. Once these requirements are met, the candidate can submit the application. The Maryland Board of Nursing website is found at the following address https://mbon.maryland.gov/Pages/default.aspx.

Some of the roles of the nurse practitioner as provided for in the act include carrying out assessment and diagnosis, educating and counselling patients, provision of preventive care and collaborating with other medical professionals to maximize positive health outcomes (Daw et al., 2021). In Maryland, several details are included in the practice agreement. The name and contact info...
