Anemia is a condition involving disorders or low volumes of red blood cells in the blood. It’s usually caused by iron deficiency or vitamin deficiency. Some forms of anemia can also be hereditary like sickle-cell anemia.
In anemic, the red blood cells may have limited hemoglobin than normal. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that allows oxygen to be transported from the lungs to the rest of the body through the red blood cells. Less hemoglobin means less oxygen and consequently shortness of breath.
From the laboratory workup of Ms. A blood, she has hemoglobin at 8g/dl while the normal level is 12g/dl for women; the erythrocyte count (3.1x10/mm) is lower than the normal range of (4.2-5.4). Erythroprotein is the hormone that tells the bone marrow to make red blood cells. Reticulocyte count stood at 1.5% whereas the normal count should be around (0.5-2.5) %. Reticulocyte count is the percentage of developing red blood cells in the blood. The hematocrit count of 32% is less the normal range of (37-48) %. Hematocrit is the ratio of volume of red blood cells to volume of the whole blood CITATION Ron13 \l 1033 (Ronald Hoffman, Edward J Benz Jr, Leslie E Silberstein, 2013). Her red blood cells smear also showed presence of microcytic and hypochromic cells meaning that the levels of hemoglobin were considerably low. These figures suggest anemia.
