Introduction
Having a combination of both leadership and management skills is an important and integral aspect for any nursing professional. While it might not be the recipe to solve everything, it nevertheless constitutes the minimum bare requirement needed to aptly launch a great career in nursing. It is therefore important for anyone in the nursing field to strive to not only learn, but also cultivate the two skills. Whereas some aspects of personality can go unnoticed, it calls for a retrospective view and insight into oneself, to be able to know the areas of strength, weaknesses, and subsequent efforts to be made for further improvement. This breeds personal understanding through reflection. There are various dimensions that I have come to learn, which need a more focused view, or perspective. These mainly revolve around personal and professional development.
* Personal and professional accountability
When it comes to this, one of my major gifts in character is my never-ending determination to always improve, to always ensure that my clients get the best services possible. To ensure that this is possible on a consistent basis, I have opted to go for regular refresher courses as well as further education. This ensures that not only do I have the knowledge, but also the latest trends in the field (AONE, 2006). Apart from pursuing further education to further my skills, I have also perfected the essence of learning from the experienced nurses. Through the routine operations at the institution, I have managed to rub shoulders with the very best, the most experienced personnel. These are individuals who have seen much of it; the challenges, opportunities and strategies of dealing with issues. In so doing, I learn to handle any anticipated challenges that might arise (Bersten, Soni &Oh, 2009).
Additionally, as part of my strengths, I have learnt to take full responsibility of my actions. This is simply to mean that I acknowledge the mistakes I make, rather than passing the blame to someone else. In this manner, I take it into my stride and learn from these mistakes. It is something that has worked for me so far, since, through learning from such mistakes, I ensure that I don’t repeat them again. In so doing, I have indirectly worked on my major weakness, which has always been to find scapegoats for anything and everything. Being accountable has made me to gradually work on this weakness, which luckily enough, is proving to be easing off.
