According to the WHO (WHO, 2021), these diseases caused 32% (17.9 million) of deaths in 2019. Among them, heart attack or stroke is the most prevalent, accounting for 85% of the 17.9 million deaths. Stroke or myocardial infarction (MI) is caused by decreased or complete cessation of blood flow to the myocardium, often caused by clots in the blood or plaques resulting from deposits of cholesterol-containing fats. Despite the rugged nature of the condition, research indicates that it is preventable through dietary interventions (Boehme, Esenwa, & Elkind, 2018) and other lifestyle choices (Bailey, 2018).
Preventing stroke involves a keen interest in and modification of lifestyle decisions that increase risk factors for the condition. For instance, choosing healthy foods and drinks prevents plaque formation, while keeping a healthy weight prevents the accumulation of fats in the body that could lead to the formation of plaques.
