End-of-life care is important to the next decades of the Canadian health care system. Projections on increasing aging populations have predicted 25% between 2022 and 2038, with the number of deaths approaching 65% (Fowler, & Hammer,2018). The majority of patients admitted to hospitals and ICUs prefer less aggressive treatment plans that are comfortable to techno-supported, institutionalized death. However, is this the way Canadian end-of-life wants it? This work explores an overview of the Canadian end-of-life context and gives the challenges for changes eminent in the healthcare sector in the future.
The increased aging population in Canada has doubled over the last three decades, stretching hospital budgets than expected. Canadian hospitals have remained the chief sponsors of end-of-life care for 70% of citizens. A proportion of 10% to 15% for patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on their final hospital admission (Fowler, & Hammer,2018). However, most of the elderly acknowledge not having the consent of intensive hospital and ICU based end-of-life. End-of-life care is a recent concept wit the terms used synonymously to mean maintenance for people in waning who are perceived to be terminally ill or can die shortly. The current idea end-of-life occurred in the last half-century ago in the U.K. molded on analgesia role, a concept that Amal gates pain with psychological and physical components and that family and friends play for dying friends.
Nurses in Canada play a role in caring for patients’ lifespan.
