Bipolar Disorder Discussion
Some people with bipolar disorders do not want to take their psychiatric medications. The primary things that contribute to it include drug abuse, medications’ side effects, anosognosia, and poor patient-psychiatrist relationship. The main reason bipolar disorder patients fail to take their medications is to avoid side effects that might include drowsiness, sexual problems, trouble sleeping, anxiety, and vomiting (Federman, 2019). Some of these people might believe that they are not sick, and that is why they do not need to take their medications.
In my opinion, legislation to force people with bipolar disorders to take medications is appropriate. Although these psychiatric medications have side effects, the disease itself have adverse consequences on the individuals affected. Bipolar disorder causes mood swings and emotional lows and highs, also known as hypomania. On that note, these people can be dangerous to themselves or others (Gottstein, 2002). Other symptoms of bipolar disorder are aggressiveness, racing thoughts, poor decision making, and talkativeness. Consequently, the medications make individuals with bipolar disorders have almost normal lives.
