Improper exercises that fail to maintain a balance between the internal and external forces, also known as bio-mechanically incorrect activities, expose individuals to a wide range of bio-mechanical problems. The bio-mechanical problems pose negative impacts on the movement of the body as it fails to react positively to the internal and external forces responsible for the production of the said movements while performing the exercises or activities. Individuals are thus exposed to bio-mechanical injuries including muscle strain, ligament strain, fractures, Achilles Tendinopathy, and Lateral Epicondylitis. Provided herein are some of the contraindicated exercises that expose individuals to bio-mechanical problems and proposed corrective measures to mitigate or rather enhance the safety of exercise activities.
* Lat Pull-down behind a person’s head
Lat pull-down is a common exercise found in most gyms and often used by individuals to achieve diverse fitness goals. Lat pull-down behind the head is, however, considered a contraindicated exercise as it exposes the body to bio-mechanical imbalances in the internal and external forces involved in moving the weight. It functions to reduce the activation of the latissimus dorsi and thus exposing an individual to cervical injury. The corrective measure requires the maintenance of a neutral spinal position by performing the lat pull-down in front of the head. The front lat pull-down produces more activation of the latissimus dorsi and thus reducing the risk of getting cervical injury and other bio-mechanical problems. It is also advisable to avoid premature flexion of the arm while performing the exercise.
