Public Health Issues and Climate Change
The natural tendency of the environment to change overtime brought about climate change. This has been intensified by environmental destruction done by the earth’s inhabitants, thereby destroying the ecosystem (Di Ruggiero, Cohen, Cole, & Forman, 2015). Climate change affects every corner of the world and its effects are evident in the United States. It caused drastic changes in the 21st century which led to the making of a policy to help alleviate the health situation in the country (American Public Health Association, 2019).
The American Public Health Association (APHA) established “Climate, Health, and Equity: A Policy Agenda” to maximize health energy, to improve transportation and land use, and to advance the use of agriculture systems. This policy prioritizes three main objectives mainly to provide a climate action for health, to provide a health action for climate, and to fund these two (American Public Health Association, 2019).
The specific objectives of this policy are as follows: 1) The policy aims to reinforce its obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement.; 2) It aims to lessen the use of oil and gas and pursues the rapid transition to the use of renewable energy.; 3) It advocates for the use of non-carbon emitting vehicles.; 4) It aims to reduce clean water scarcity.; 5) It encourages healthy and ecological food systems to supply the United States’ population needs.; 6) It empowers policies that support the transition of communities from high-carbon to a low-carbon economy.; 7) It advocates for climate change through the health sector.; 8) It integrates climate solutions to public health.; 9) It helps construct a community that can withstand climate change.; 10) and lastly, it endows its policies toward climate and health (American Public Health Association, 2019).
Population Affected
All sectors are affected in the U.S., especially in the most urban and highly industrialized areas where ozone-related emissions pose direct and indirect health-related risks. These highly industrialized societies are responsible for incurring the vast majority of air and water pollution. Eckelman & Sherman (2016) studied the health effects of air pollution in the U.S. and compared them from the previous years. It revealed that the particulate matter, PM2.5, and ozone-related burdens resulted in 2.2 million years of life lost (YLL) in 2005. Additionally, this caused the premature death of 210,600 people (Eckelman & Sherman, 2016).
Climate change also poses a danger to the U.S. population due to the awakening of the dormant microorganisms from the melting ice in its previously frozen areas. These may cause new diseases to appear, including those which have been long forgotten in history. These diseases may spread from one place to another via its vectors and through the flow of water source (Rosenberg et al, 2018).
