Assessing a child's developmental milestones is necessary to obtain information regarding their cognitive, motor, social, and emotional skills, identifying if it is occurring in the expected age-appropriate manner (Kaufman, 2018). Monitoring these will enable the parents, caregivers, and medical professionals to promote learning depending on the capacity and development of the child. In addition to this, a child will be viewed holistically in an individualized way, which will help provide for the child's specific needs.
Bonnie is a six-year-old female from a full-term pregnancy born at 39 weeks. She weighed 6 lbs. upon delivery. The mother of Bonnie made sure she was able to breastfeed her for at least six months until the physician advised weaning so Bonnie can accommodate a soft diet and different nutritious age-appropriate food. Bonnie was able to demonstrate various milestones that are fit for her age. At four months old, she can roll from prone to supine, hold and shake a toy, bring her hand towards her mouth, and was already starting to babble. At six months, she can respond by making vowel sounds when her name is called and sit without support. At nine months, Bonnie can already differentiate family from strangers and is even clingy towards her mother. She is also now able to stand but with handheld support to balance herself. At one year old, Bonnie already uses "papa" and "mama" and tries to repeat words when she hears them. Physically, she can also take a few independent steps, stand independently, and cruise. At two years old, she is already very playful and can now run around, kick a ball, and throw a ball in an overhand manner.
