Corpulence is a chronic health complication recurrent in adolescents living in the United States.Obesity is characterized by extreme adipose tissue in the body. A child is said to be obese if at or exceeds 95thcentile. It is a risk cause of diabetes mellitus and heart diseases. It also causes low self-esteem due to social segregation, peer victimization and despair. The health care professionals have therefore contributed enormously in addressing childhood obesity through implementation of various strategies (Dietz, 2016).
Significance of the Nurses in Addressing Childhood Obesity
Nurses perform regular investigation of students in the school health clinics to identify those at risk of corpulence. They determine the body mass index to ensure it is with the normal range. In addition, they conduct nutritional education to the students to inform them on health eating habits to avoid obesity. This education is also provided to the guardians of the children to aid in combating this heath menace (Turner et al, 2013).
The health care providers also have a role in counseling and educating the students on the need for regular physical activities, and eating of healthy diets in the school and at home. This ensures adoption of healthy lifestyles aimed at preventing obesity and its adverse health complications (Dietz, 2016).
The advanced nurses formulate nutrition policies to be integrated in the school health programs. This includes policies regarding healthy lifestyles and diet for the children. They also advocate for effective physical exercise programs for the obese students, or those at risk of obesity (Turner et al, 2013).
