In Maryland, the law allows Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to practice independently when prescribing drugs. Nurse practitioners have a full prescriptive authority which enables them to (Maryland Board of Nursing, 2020). When it comes to practice authority, Maryland has full practice authority. This means that under the state's board of nursing licensure, nurse practitioners can diagnose patients, order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic results, and initiate treatment, among others, without collaborative agreements or consultation with physicians. But, in the first 18 months of practice, nurse practitioners are required to collaborate and consult with either a physician or another nurse practitioner (MedSource, 2018).
