Summary of the Problem- Wound Infection
Treating infected wounds is a top priority in hospital settings, but clinicians also need to implement evidence-based practice to improve wound management. Promoting healing and preventing problems associated with wound management improves patient outcomes, but hospitals also rely on different wound management practices and protocols. Nurses understand the importance of health promotion, and wound care not only promotes wound heal, but also prevent wound infections. When undertaking wound care procedures, nurses also prioritize the factors which influence wound healing. Failure to treat wound infections increases the risk of contamination, colonization and tissue damage. As such, nurses evaluate changes in the patients’ condition with emphasis on wound care management to reduce the risk of wound infection.
Description of the middle-range theory
Pender’s Health Promotion Model proposed by Nola J. Pender proposed that disease prevention and health promotion should be considered in holistic care. Increasing the well being of patients should be prioritized to improve outcomes, while health promoting behaviors prevent illnesses (Jackson, Tucker, & Herman, 2007). The theory supposes that people have unique characteristics and experiences, which influence their actions depending on their knowledge and motivation. However, it is possible to modify nursing actions through health promoting behavior to improve health outcomes and the quality of life. Perceived barriers to action are factors that directly influence behavior, and the more people are committed towards promoting health the more they are likely to exhibit health promoting behavior.
Pender’s Health Promotion Model is appropriate in wound care management to prevent infection, as the approach focuses on health promotion and wellness. As people are motivated to achieve optimal health, this improves their wellbeing as this integrates emotional, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual aspects. For health promoting theories like, the outcome is Health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and is related to improving the quality of life (McWen & Wills, 2011). Health promotion is effective when there is high motivation and commitment to make changes, which are associated with positive health behaviors. Health promotion extends to discharge planning where efforts are made where wound care management is effective to prevent potential complications. Since Pender’s Health Promotion Model highlights goal-directed behavior as being crucial to competent self care, the theory is humanistic.
