The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was enacted in 2010. It has since revolutionized the insurance industry with a broad range of impacts. The most notable effect is the increasing premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs, particularly with plans sold on health insurance exchanges (Uberoi, Finegold & Gee, 2016). When choosing an employer health insurance plan, it is, therefore, necessary to consider the impacts of ACA on the plan. Other factors to consider are employee lifestyle choices and health economics. This paper highlights the impact of the Affordable Care Act on an employer health care plan and how employee lifestyle choices and health economics also factor in in determining the plan.
The plan I choose for the organization was UnitedHealthcare (UHC) Choice. UHC is one of the best firms that offer health insurance plans in the United States. It offers health insurance that meets the requirements of the ACA for essential care. UHC members enjoy the standout feature: access to online care 24/7 which includes the ability to speak with a nurse help online, participate in online wellness programs and order prescriptions online. They even have a mobile app for easier access (UHC, 2018). The UHC Choice offers fixed dollar copayments, coinsurance options and lower out-of-pocket costs for network care. It is a good option for a small organization like mine, which has less than 50 employees.
The ACA required our organization to enroll in Small Business Health Options Programs (SHOP) and will do so through UHC. Although we qualify for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit to lower premium costs, there are other ways in which ACA affects the organization. We are required to provide information to our employees about the marketplace regardless of whether we are offering insurance or not. Health insurance for all eligible employees must be offered within 90 days of their start date. We must explain to the employees on what the health plan covers and its costs in a standard “Summary of Benefits and Coverage” form (Uberoi, Finegold & Gee, 2016).
