Adolescents in modern times face a myriad of issues in their lives, and it appears that mental disorders and, specifically, depression ought to be given more attention. Depression is a “predominant illness characterized by the loss of interest in activities that an individual usually enjoys and persistent sadness often accompanied by an inability to undertake daily activities” (Razzak, Harbi, & Ahli, 2019, p. 274). Mojtabai, Olfson, and Han (2016, p. 2) argue that “the risk of depression sharply rises as children transition to adolescence,” implying that it needs addressing if humanity is to reap a solid society. In 2017 alone, about 3.2 million adolescents experienced at least one major depressive episode in the United States (US) (National Institute of Mental Health, 2019). This number constitutes a significant percentage of the population, with even greater concern about girls (Geiger & Davis, 2019). The figures reveal the gravity of the situation at hand, and thus, concerned stakeholders are responsible for responding to the issue, including addressing its stressor factors.
A couple of external stressors links with depression among adolescents, and external stressors are prevalent in the psychosocial risk factors, which define the chemistry that arises from depression and environmental factors. In this case, the adolescent could have been exposed to an acutely stressful event. An excellent example is a personal injury that affects their ability to perform their daily activities proficiently (Richmond et al., 2009).
