The core functions of epidemiology.
Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related occurrences within a specific population. Epidemiological study findings provide useful knowledge in control health problems. Epidemiology is a scientific process the is data-driven whereby it is a systematic approach to collecting, analyzing and interpreting data (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012).
One of the core functions of epidemiology is to carefully observe and use comparisons to assess the disease trends within a particular area within a specified period or the frequency of an exposure of diseases (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Epidemiology provides insightful data to help in the clinical practices. Clinical practices derive their knowledge from epidemiological research on disease prevention and control, which includes promoting the overall public health at the same time teaching patients on how to protect themselves from infectious diseases (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012).

Registered nurses with advanced knowledge are expected to integrate research knowledge into the clinical understanding of illness to assist individuals and families within the specific population (Department of Health and Human Services, 2014). Advanced registered nurses are expected to articulate health illness experience of vulnerable populations and families to planners to help the community minimize certain disease through prevention activities. Registered nurses are knowledgeable about different interventions and are expected to translate research knowledge to assist the population through d different initiative (Department of Health and Human Services, 2014).
