Tame and Nasty Problems
Introduction
Every day there are problems that people meet requiring a solution. Some of these problems are solvable while others remain unsolved. Problems with possible solutions are called tame problems while those that do not have specific solutions are called nasty ot wicked problems. According to Dooley (2018), nasty problems are also called wicked, even though this does not mean that they are evil. The issue with nasty problems is that as people try to solve them, they only move away from the possible solution or end up disagreeing instead of agreeing and moving to a common solution. Nasty problems create conflicts at the end instead of uniting people. Unlike nasty problems, tame problems have a problem somewhere and one can solve them if one continues working on them, even though sometimes they appear complex and can take time to be solved. Tame problems can be easily defined and be defined as right and wrong. The two parties seek to agree and find a solution to the problem and they will agree at a point and reach an agreement. This paper discusses two examples of tame and nasty problems.
Tame Problem Example and Analysis
One example of a tame problem in the world today is the problem of air pollution. The cause of air pollution is known, its effects defined, and possible solutions are already in place. The issue is, however, that this problem remains an issue and countries are still struggling with it in spite of understanding its causes. The major components of air pollution are smog from industries, use of carbon fuels, and burning of plastics. Industries are the main causes of air pollution because they are used as manufacturing plants. Automobiles running on carbon fuels are also cause air pollution. If one wants to solve air pollution, one could start by reducing use of fossil fuels in industries. However, this approach could imply that people start using alternative sources of energy for powering these industries such as electricity or wind which are considered clean sources of energy. Alternatively, the government could impose heavy taxation on fuel fossils so that people start using alternative sources of energy.
There are several factors that make this problem tame. One of these is that there are different solutions and people can reach a common consensus about it. For instance, the consequences of air pollution such as global warming have already been felt and even those that were once disagreeing with the argument that human activities contribute to global warming have started admitting the truth. In the end, if t...
