Over the last twelve months, I have been increasingly involved in promoting traditional culture to the young generation through fabrics. Chinas history and early civilization are intertwined with silk production and, later on, textiles used for clothing and trade. Despite the emergence of cotton under the Ming Dynasty to rival silk, silk retained its role as a luxury fabric and a symbol of Chinese culture. Over the years, traditional fabrics made of silk have taken a back seat and have been surpassed with modern western culture designs. The younger Chinese generations know little if any of ancient and traditional fabrics.
Through field investigations, research, literature, expert interviews, questionnaires, and historical analysis, I have identified traditional Chinese fabric at risk of extinction. The main focus of my research and outreach has been the XiangYunSha (香云纱) fabric. XiangYunSha is a gauze silk fabric manufactured by coating silk made from mulberry with yam juice, then covering the material in river water containing minerals and mud, and finally allowing the fabric to dry out in the sun. It is believed that the production of XiangYunSha fabric began under the Ming Dynasty during the Yongle period.
