Week Seven Revisit Reflection Your Name Subject and Section Professor’s Name March 20, 2019 1 Outline the central tenets and identify the significant figures of holistic education in the early years Holistic education is generally defined “as a child-centered teaching philosophy that focuses on nurturing the child's inner potential” (Fung, n.d.). It differs from traditional classroom learning in such a way that it integrates different elements into the teaching process, which ensures that every child excels according to his talents and experiences, as well as learn based on their competencies. Accordingly, some of the central tenets of holistic education are (1) a spiritual worldview, (2) unfolding the potential of each child, (3) connection, and (4) belief that humans are inherently good. These four creates a framework for the practice of holistic education as a whole. Specifically, the first tenet – a spiritual worldview – talks about the importance of appreciating life as it exists, as well as the mysterious connection that exists between us humans. It is contrary to what most people would think that it talks about a common religion, for having a spiritual worldview could transcend those divisions. The second tenet – unfolding the potential of each child – recognizes the fact that each child has his competencies in life. Accordingly, educating them should not be based upon a rigid and static framework of education, but rather a dynamic and proactive one that would cater to their calling. The third tenet – connection – talks about the interconnectivity that should exist between subjects (Miller, 2010). Although it was said earlier that children have their specific competencies, holistic education still strives to build a balance between an appreciation for these different subjects.
