Raven and French's five types of organizational power include coercive, legitimate, reward, expert, and referent (Kovach, 2020). Characteristics of coercive power include intimidation, threats, resentment, and force. Legitimate power has the following attributes: the right to make demands, legal authority to take action, and moral obligation. Reward power is characterized by promotions, compliments, compensations, bonuses, and giving extra time off from work. Expert power is accompanied by the following features: high levels of knowledge, skills, experience, expertise, and intelligence. Finally, the following are the characteristics of referent power: Attractiveness, worthiness, and respect (Lunenburg, 2012).
Legitimate, reward, expert, and referent power have impacted today's organization by fostering collaboration, productivity, and innovation compared to the past.
