The first step toward earning the level 1 preliminary credential required by the state for special education certification is to complete a degree program. To acquire this certificate, one must complete six requirements. A bachelor's degree in education or special education is the first step to leaping into the workforce. The second step is to complete the fundamental skills examinations required for licensures, such as the CBEST, CSET, and other tests specific to the state of residence (CBEST & CSET Exams,2022). In the third step, one needs to demonstrate that he or she is a subject matter expert and is capable of teaching more than one subject because, in special education, an individual will be required to teach more than one subject. The RICA (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment) is the fourth prerequisite, and it is the most difficult (Zarrillo,2017).
