Time Out Behavioral Strategy
Time out behavioral strategy is used for children with unacceptable behavior, by removing them from activities being done by other children in class and denying them attention for a little while. The idea in time out is to give a child time and space to reflect on the negative behavior. The benefits of using time out are that it is a quick form of punishment and a child is more likely to reduce bad behavior knowing that consequences involve being alienated from fun activities (Wheeler & Richey, 2018, p. 256). However, children are different and must be constantly monitored during time out since the technique may be negative reinforcement. For instance, a child who wants out of class might misbehave intentionally to be given time out. Also, the technique should be done briefly to avoid denying children bathroom of lunch breaks. Hence, time out used in behavioral management can have both positive and negative outcomes.
