My Reflection
While trying anything new, one is likely to be scared. The uncertainties of a new job, a new course, a further step in life often leads to fears of inadequacy. Will I measure up? Will I be good enough? Will I succeed? These are some of the questions we can ask ourselves as we try to wade through the fear harbor. When I took up Linguistic in hearing class at [university] in [year], these thoughts flooded my mind. My fears were enhanced because my former counselor at [university] had already told me that Linguistics was difficult. Regardless of the fear I felt, I decided to take up Linguistics, and I got to learn many things, including Grammar, Syntax, and Discourse Analysis. As the lessons progressed, it became evident that these elements of Linguistics were different. For example, in Grammar, my former teacher was quite strict. His reasons seemed valid because he talked of Grammar being the avenue through which we study how people speak and the use of sign language.
Further, he emphasized some aspects of Grammar, including subject-verb agreement, use of colons, question marks, parenthesis, use of lists, among others. The many elements of Grammar had me scared, but I continued to learn and eventually understood the difference between Linguistics and Grammar. The journey was far from pleasant or easy. However, I can say that I have come to love Linguistics, and I persevered through the class.
