Todd Whitaker’s “What Great Teachers Do Differently: 17 Things That Matter Most” reveals the best teaching practices that ASL tutors can use. In chapter five, the author says that “Effective teachers want to prevent misbehavior, whereas ineffective teachers focus on punishing students when they misbehave” (Whitaker, 2013, p.25). On that note, when I was tutoring ASL students, I avoided things that might have resulted in misunderstanding and promoted misbehaviors that disrupted teaching.
Chapter six makes it clear that teachers’ high expectations for their students should not hold under all circumstances.
