The future will continue to be bleak if the current educational practices persist. The modern social and political experiences are fruits of an education system that abdicated its role of enlightening young people and instead engaged in machinations that have made the country more polarized than before. Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg and Rey Junco, in their article “Teaching Controversial Issues in a Time of Polarization,” highlight the pertinent issues that the education system should focus on to address the current controversy. The authors propose the need to engage in productive discussions about contentious topics that affect society.
Parents and teachers play a significant role in the development of children. Parents nurture the personality of the children while teachers expose them to the real social issues that further shape their development. These young people hold whatever they are taught in high regard and believe in the ideals up to their adulthood. A teacher who holds certain political tenets will tend to impart those ideals to his or her students. Similarly, a parent who does not appreciate politics will influence his or her children to take the same path. With the advent of technology, social media is also playing a pivotal role in shaping adolescents. Through the social platform, the youths express their ideas and read the perspectives of the others, eventually creating their perception of an ideal society and operating by their own rules.
