Special educators must be proficient at more than simply teaching, planning, and addressing student concerns. A large portion of the special educator’s career will be spent creating, implementing, and reviewing IEPs in meetings with families and other professionals. Most educators find that the present level of academic and functional performance (PLAAFP) is the most essential part of the IEP because it paints a picture of the student and guides the goals, services, accommodations, and modifications within the rest of the IEP. Once a solid PLAAFP is written, then appropriate, measurable and observable goals for the student must be written. Part 1: Present Level of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP)
For this benchmark assignment, you will use the “Ana Case Study” to write a 250-500 word PLAAFP.
Your PLAAFP should include:
Student academic strengths
Evaluations
Performance in classes
Potential influences of language, culture, and family background
Strengths, preferences, and interests in nonacademic areas
Any other relevant issues
Part 2: Annual Goals
Write two measurable academic goals and two measurable behavioral goals for Ana. Each goal should include:
A specific, measurable skill/behavior to be achieved.
A specific measurement tool or assessment strategy for measuring performance on the goal.
Part 3: Rationale
Provide a 500-750 word rationale that clearly defends how each annual goal, assessment tool or strategy, and action steps are appropriate for Ana, based on the information and data in the PLAAFP.
In addition, using the “College of Education Professional Dispositions of Learners,” identify a disposition that you, as a special education teacher, would want to especially demonstrate with Ana and her family. Explain how this disposition would assist you in incorporating Ana’s language, culture, and family background into planning and delivering instruction that meets Ana’s academic and social-emotional development needs. In addition, what steps would you recommend to Ana, her family, and the IEP team for Ana to accomplish her goals?

Introduction
Special educators are critical in the education system because they cater to learners' special needs. That is why special educators need to be more proficient in teaching and planning. The individualized education program (IEP) presents special education instruction and supports learners' needs to succeed in school. The present level of academic and functional performance (PLAAFP) is critical in IEP since it outlines the learner's goals and modifications needed to accommodate the learner's needs. A written PLAAFP should include the goals for the students, which should be achieved. This paper will present the PLAAFP based on Ana's case study by highlighting the required annual goals and the rationale for each goal.
Part 1: PLAAFP
One of Ana's strengths is that she is a disciplined student, given that she does not have a disciplinary referral in any of the grades until the present time. Another strength is that while Ana has challenges in school, she wants to be in school to make her mother proud and engage in sports. Additionally, Ana is respectful to adults, as demonstrated by how she acknowledges them by saying "thank you" and responding to their questions. Further, Ana asks questions and can engage in conversations with adults.
The testing and evaluation using verbal (WISC) and non-verbal (UNIT) IQ testing places Ana in the average intelligence range with an IQ of 105. Ana's broad reading and reading fluency performance are 82 and 81, respectively, on Woodcock-Johnson III Tests. The two form the lowest scores for Ana, meaning that she has major challenges with reading. However, Ana performs better on broad math, with a score of 99, which is an average range. The score for applied problems is 104, which is the highest among the subtest scores. Her math fluency is also average, with a score of 101.
Despite the challenges Ana faces, she has unique strengths that give her an advantage. Ana has interests in non-academic areas, especially sports. Ana likes sports, only that she is "too small" to play them. Such an interest is advantageous to Ana since she is willing to engage in an extra curriculum activity. Additionally, Ana has no problem interacting with teachers. She converses with them easily, which implies opening up to her challenges. Talking to teachers can assist her in getting the help that she needs to deal with her problems.
Ana's language, culture, and family background have played a critical role in her studies. Firstly, Ana's parents have limited education, with the mother having completed her GED after Ana's birth and the father did not complete his high school degree. Ana's two of the same-age cousins struggle to attend high school in the extended family. Hence, she does not have anyone to look up to as far as education is concerned. Furthermore, the father plays limited life in Ana's life. The parents never married, and the father did not take any responsibility for Ana. The lack of support from the parents because of family instability has adverse effects on a child (Sandstrom & Huerta, 2013).
