1 At the end of the clinical training, the student shall demonstrate appropriate decision-making guided by ethics and legal medicine in primary, secondary, and tertiary mental healthcare settings, evaluated by psychiatric mental health advanced practice nurses through feedback scoring.
Psychiatric mental health nursing is a vulnerable field of medicine because this requires comprehensive assessment and extremes of compassion in providing sufficient care for the patients. Often, ethical problems arise secondary to intellectual, cultural, and moral differences secondary to difficult choices. The complexity of the practice is demonstrated by the lack of easy strategies to combat the disorders of the patients (Aydin & Ersoy, 2017).
It is critical to demonstrate moral preparedness in dealing with ethical problems in this practice. The health practitioner should be in excellent physical, mental, emotional, educational, and psychological well-being to achieve this. Moral blindness is unacceptable as this is the root cause of the neglect of the patient’s rights, which prevents the holistic approach to healthcare. Furthermore, disregarding the patients’ rights might result in legal repercussions, which at all times, should be avoided (Aydin & Ersoy, 2017).
Therefore, the students should practice their ethics and legal medicine in the clinical setting to avoid such circumstances. The students’ performances can be evaluated through a scoring rubric via observation of the clinical instructors. The students should achieve the goal at the end of the clinical rotation.
2 At the end of the clinical training, the student shall collaborate with the different members of the medical team, as demonstrated by the reduction or total abolishment of the incident reports concerning improper consultations or referrals to the respective team members.
Collaboration is significant in the success of the treatment regimens in the practice of psychiatric and mental health nursing. The medical team consists of many members, including the physician or the psychiatrist, nurses, psychologists, and in some cases, even social workers. Each member has a role, and excellent collaboration among the team members is necessary to ensure the success of the treatment (Rugkåsa et al., 2020).
Collaboration is facilitated by excellent communication among the team members to prevent misunderstanding and ensure that the treatment regimen is appropriate and follows the established principles in psychiatry. Additionally, this requires social skills (i.e., engagement, visibility, and having relationship-building skills) and professional skills (i.e., expertise and clinical experience) (Rugkåsa et al., 2020).
Collaborative care is associated with the increased success of the treatment regimens and proper coordination with other departments, resulting in cost-effectiveness for the families financing the patients (Rugkåsa et al., 2020).
