Correctional officers comprise the most crucial resource vital for achieving the objectives and goals of the institution. The officers constantly work in coercive environments as they are tasked with controlling and managing inmates who are often unwilling to cooperate and are unpredictable, volatile, and dangerous. This paper discusses different liability perspectives that correctional officers might have from their leaders, leadership style needs for adjustment in correctional facilities, and handling of ethical issues in such contexts.
Correctional officers are expected by their leaders to prevent a culture of secrecy and brutality that is increasingly flourishing in correctional facilities. The correctional officers union, such as the one in New York, comprises over 20,000 members, thus wielding formidable political influence and power, making it hard for the prison leader to dismiss officers guilty or suspected of brutalizing inmates (Worley et al., 2021). Since an external arbitrator decides whether a rogue officer should be fired, especially in New York, the correctional officers are liable for preventing abuse and harm to the inmates. Another liability perspective relates to the need for the correctional officer to avoid involvement in sexual torture or humiliation of the inmates. Officers are expected to avoid degrading offenders as part of the punishment but rather uphold ethics when handling inmates. In addition, their leaders expect the officers to avoid inappropriate sexual relationships with the prisoners they supervise (Worley et al., 2021). This might include aiding and abetting inmates in their attempt to escape the correctional facility.
Leadership styles should be adjusted in diverse prison environments to meet their different expectations. The autocratic leadership style is obsolete, and other innovative leadership models, including procedural justice, collaborative, appreciative inquiry, as well as transformative, are increasingly guiding contemporary correctional facility management.
